Casco Viejo, also known as Casco Antiguo, is a historic neighborhood of Panama City, located west of the city. It was the first settlement of the city, built in 1519, and is composed of different buildings in Spanish, Victorian, Neoclassical and Art Deco colonial architectural styles. The neighborhood has become the second most visited tourist destination after the Panama Canal and increasingly popular, with a plethora of restaurants, shops, art galleries and other interesting places to explore.
Casco Viejo was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003. The area was built in the seventeenth century by the Spanish.
The Baluarte de la Mano del Tigre was a Spanish fortification built in 1597 on the southeastern edge of Panama City, to defend it from attack by English pirates. This fortress, located at the southeastern end of ancient Panama City, was the first in a series of fortification structures built to defend the city. The bastion was designed by the Spanish architect Pedro de Orrantia and built with mud and stone bricks. It was armed with cannons and was known as "The Tiger's Hand" because of the figure of a tiger engraved on the front door.
Today the building is remodeled maintaining its façade of the first order in luxury apartments for investment or housing.
